Hello all, and welcome to my review of Mortdecai! 😀

  Starring: Johnny Depp (Charlie Mortdecai), Gwyneth Paltrow (Johanna Mortdecai), Ewan McGregor (Martland), Paul Bettany (Jock Strapp), Olivia Munn (Georgina), Jeff Goldblum (Krampf), Jonny Pasvolski (Emil)

Plot (taken from Movie Insider):

“Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.”

Characters:

Johnny Depp (Charlie Mortdecai) – Mortdecai is a lovable idiot, lol, and Johnny Depp did a really great job of playing him in a way that made me like him. Sometimes this kind of character can make me cringe, especially since I’m usually very picky with comedies, and also with the lead characters in these movies. However, this character was so charming that he has become the first idiot type character (lovable or otherwise) to not trip my overly sensitive cringe reflex.

Gwyneth Paltrow (Johanna Mortdecai) – I love this character’s cool-headed manner, and calm approach to pretty much everything. How she interacts with Mortdecai is actually really cute, and it makes for some of the funniest parts in the movie.

Ewan McGregor (Martland) – This character was fun, but sometimes a little annoying in places.

Paul Bettany (Jock Strapp) – This character was a lot of fun too. His answer to everything is generally either punching people in the face after Mortdecai gets himself into trouble, or women. Lol, lots and lots of women. He seems resigned to the fact that there always will be some kind of trouble if Mortdecai leaves the house, or is awake. XD

Olivia Munn (Georgina) – The aforementioned (in the trailer) nymphomaniac, lol.

Jeff Goldblum (Krampf) – The aforementioned nymphomaniac’s father, who also happens to be a not so nice guy in the art world.

Jonny Pasvolski (Emil) – The bad guy who wants the painting, and is running around trying to kill everybody to get his hands on it. He’s a good, silly kind of villain.

Review:

I’m always picky with comedies and horror. Lol, I don’t know why, but for some reason there’s this whole list of things I can find to nitpick about in those genres.

Throw people in tights and capes at me though, and we’re all good. XD

Lol, totally makes sense, I know. For some reason I don’t usually have much to complain about in those movies, unless they mess with my romance.

Honestly though, I can’t find too much to nitpick here though. O.O

This movie had a kind of Pink Panther feel to it, which was fun. I loved the contrast of him being this big art world criminal, and also being completely ridiculous. XD

I don’t know. Maybe it’s because I feel like Johnny Depp can pull off almost anything. He made Mortdecai seem oddly charming, in his own silly way.

The different characters, and how Mortdecai interacts with each, was really well done. They were over the top, but in a fun kind of way. Each had some kind of personality quirk that stood out, and made them more interesting.

They all reacted to Mortdecai and his shenanigans in funny ways too, based on their quirks. Everyone seemed resigned, especially Jock and Johanna, but in a ‘shaking their head with a smile’ kind of a way. 🙂

Mortdecai’s relationship with his wife was my favorite, however. It was just so cute! Especially the whole mustache issue. XD

My rating for Mortdecai: Not Bad – Lol, I’m still not sure if I’ll be buying it or not. I feel like I want to see the movie again to test it. It was a cute kind of comedy, and definitely worth watching. Check it out if you like movies like Pink Panther and Austen Powers. 😀

My Rating System:

Epic: This movie is so mind-bogglingly awesome that I may go see it twice. This one will have a place of honor on my shelf.

Cash-Worthy: Good stuff. This will most likely find a place on my shelf.

Not Bad: I liked it. I’m glad I saw it, and it may or may not end up on my shelf at some point. I would say rent it first to be safe.

Meh: Rent it first. You may love it or hate it, but I’m indifferent probably because it’s not my type of movie. I’m glad I saw it, but it won’t end up on my shelf.

Emergency Cake: I have an emotional reaction to movies sometimes, especially to tragedies. If a movie makes me sad or angry, sometimes it will stick with me for a while. At these times, only chocolate cake can save me. Chocolate cake makes everything better. No shelf for you. Ever.
