Hello all, and welcome to my review of Fifty Shades Freed! 😀 You know I *had* to see the last one, lol.
Starring: Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele), Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey), Eric Johnson (Jack Hyde)
Plot (taken from IMDb):
“Anastasia and Christian get married, but Jack Hyde continues to threaten their relationship.”
Trailer:
Characters:
Dakota Johnson (Anastasia Steele) – YAAAAAY! FINALLY!!!! We get to see Ana tell someone to sit and spin, and she also tells Christian to “deal with it” a few times. Thank. You. God. I feel like she was stronger in this movie, and only did what she wanted when it came to kinky time. Outside of kinky time, she also seemed to be holding her own a lot better.
Jamie Dornan (Christian Grey) – I liked that he learned to let go more in this movie, and let Ana do her thing. At least more so than in the first two movies, lol. He was still a control freak, and sometimes was still waaaay over the top, and there was one scene where I was rolling my eyes so hard my brain hurt (you’ll know the scene when you see it – I even rant about it briefly below), but I still like him over all.
Eric Johnson (Jack Hyde) – Lol, this guy’s demeanor completely changed from those first scenes you see him in, in the second movie. And he is also a super spy who knows how to build bombs and bypass complicated security systems… O.O Who is this guy? Bond’s sloppy, evil doppelganger?

Review:
I was actually looking forward to this one. The first two movies – Fifty Shades of Grey and Fifty Shades Darker, were honestly fun, and I was interested to see how they wrapped everything up.
Lol, you know me by now. You know I’ve come to expect that each consecutive sequel after the first movie, in any series of movies (with only a few exceptions), will be slightly worse than the one before it.
Sometimes *much* worse.

^^^^ ….you know what you did, Matrix…. ^^^^
The Fifty Shades series of movies has been one of those rare exceptions to my bias, however. Each consecutive movie after the first has actually improved! 😀
The pacing felt so much better, and the subplots seemed like less of an afterthought this time around. This is, first and foremost, a kinky romance, but I liked that there was more going on besides naked sexy time.
Lol, the villain was still a little over the top , and had unexplainable super spy skills and endless funds from the magical money tree with which to plot his super spy revenge. There were some amazing coincidences with the villain’s motives too.

I still think the subplots in this movie worked a lot better than the last two though. And this one even had a fun car chase!
I also appreciated that Ana and Christian’s relationship continued to grow. There was a much better balance between them.
For Ana’s part, I think she showed a lot more personality. She was a lot less passive, and really took charge of her career, and even got sassy with Christian.

In fact, on more than one occasion Ana really stands up for herself, both to Christian and to certain secondary characters that try to put their dirty mitts on Christian’s person.

I see that hand, missy… O.o
Christian also got stronger over the course of the movie too, but in a more emotional way.
He mentioned he was in therapy (maybe he also said it in the second movie too?), which is fantastic because he was using BDSM to take his issues out on his partners in the beginning. They actually do address this issue in this last movie, and he seems to be making a lot more progress in learning how to be in a healthy BDSM relationship.
He’s finally open with Ana, and is facing his demons. This helps him and Ana get closer as a couple, and also helps them both find a happy compromise in what they both want out of their (now) mutual kink.

And Jamie Dornan is still awesome at bringing on that intensity.

Christian still had his moments where I was like, “Really, dude? REALLY?”
One scene in particular, where he disagreed with Ana on a fairly big issue, he acted super childish and selfish. Aaannnd my eye rolling began.
** Very mild spoiler for the next three paragraphs. **
While I feared for my ability to keep my eyes in my head dealing with Christian’s insane expectations – because, you know, anatomy & physiology + when two grown-ups love each other and participate in what Ana lovingly refers to as “kinky fuckery” every day – certain things can happen.
Yes, Christian, accidents *do* happen. People *are* sometimes late taking their birth control.
I get it that he wasn’t ready – that’s totally fine! Not everybody wants kids, and those that do generally prefer to be more prepared when it happens if possible. But wow – he kind of went off on Ana like she purposely sabotaged his grand plans for continued “kinky fuckery” out of spite or something.

** End of very mild spoiler. **
I seriously *love* Ana for telling Christian to “grow the fuck up” during that argument.
Christian eventually does deal with it in a more mature way though, and takes the time to explain his freak out to Ana. In the end, he’s open about his hang-ups and I appreciate that character growth.
Over all, this was a fun series of movies to watch. There are some not-so-healthy aspects to Christian and Ana’s relationship, especially in the beginning, but they both grow, and kind of end up being cute, lol.

My rating for Fifty Shades Freed: Cash-Worthy – I gave this one a higher rating because it really is the best of the 3 movies. Lol, as with the first two movies, go into this from the perspective of just wanting to have fun. It was actually pretty good movie, and I liked that the characters grew over time. Definitely check this one out if you like movies like Secretary, Fifty Shades of Grey, or Fifty Shades Darker, or like movies with BDSM themes in general.
Also, the soundtrack is good again:

My Rating System:
Epic: This movie is so mind-bogglingly awesome that I may go see it twice. This one will have a place of honor on my shelf.
Cash-Worthy: Good stuff. This will most likely find a place on my shelf.
Not Bad: I liked it. I’m glad I saw it, and it may or may not end up on my shelf at some point. I would say rent it first to be safe.
Meh: Rent it first. You may love it or hate it, but I’m indifferent probably because it’s not my type of movie. I’m glad I saw it, but it won’t end up on my shelf.
Emergency Cake: I have an emotional reaction to movies sometimes, especially to tragedies. If a movie makes me sad or angry, sometimes it will stick with me for a while. At these times, only chocolate cake can save me. Chocolate cake makes everything better. No shelf for you. Ever.

So, I’m guessing the characters grew in this movie.
I kid, of course, but that does seem a bit of a defensive statement. To someone not engaged in these movies, it may even seem as if, perhaps, they had a lot of climbing to do and barely started up the staircase.
As you know, the likelihood of me ever watching any of these movies is . . . well, nil is just not a strong enough word, but then, I’m also not the target audience.
I’m glad you liked it and that the series ended in ascension as opposed to the referenced Matrix series . . . although it was a surprise reading they made more than one Matrix movie. Perhaps I suppressed the memory of them. I do remember going in for a lobotomy, but I don’t remember the “why” so whatever it was, it must have worked.
Lmao – you caught me! XD I have to admit, I’m struggling to rationalize why I like this series of movies so much, but I can’t help myself. It’s like a guilty pleasure I don’t generally admit to liking out loud. XD
Lol, I try *really* hard not to be too harsh because I can’t get too critical without commenting on the writing, and I have this superstitious feeling like it would be bad juju for me to say much, since I’m a starving writer myself. We all start somewhere, and I’m not a paragon of perfection over here, but…. yeah, you’re not wrong when you say the characters may have had a lot of climbing to do. I keep harping on the growth of the characters because I feel like they started *miles* from the staircase, only catching glimpses of it through binoculars from time to time, lol.
I saw a review on YouTube where the reviewer pointed out that this series of books was originally Twilight fanfiction, and basically just names were changed and professions added, leaving the characters emotionally immature. I think that probably is a big problem with these stories. That, and the need for brutal editing.
I saw this movie with a friend (my poor, long-suffering hubby is eternally grateful to her), and the first thing she said when we walked out was, “wow, that was almost good!” XD
Lmao – and if you did have a lobotomy that targeted all memories of Matrix 3, I’m tempted to say sign me up! XD I know people who loved it, but for me it was absolutely a chocolate cake movie. If I did a review on it, it would be 95% ranting, with the last 5% saved just for cussing. XD
